System 2 vs System 3 vs System 4 Aircon: Which Is Right for Your Home?
What do System 2, 3 and 4 mean, and which one fits your HDB, condo or landed home? A simple guide to multi-split aircon systems in Singapore.
By SPMM Group ·
In Singapore, "System" tells you how many indoor fan coils share one outdoor unit (the condensing unit, or CU). Choosing the right system is the first step of any aircon installation.
What the numbers mean
- System 1 – 1 outdoor unit + 1 fan coil.
- System 2 – 1 outdoor unit + 2 fan coils.
- System 3 – 1 outdoor unit + 3 fan coils.
- System 4 – 1 outdoor unit + 4 fan coils.
Count the rooms you want to cool – one fan coil per room – and that's usually your system.
Typical choices by home type
- 3-room HDB – System 2 or System 3 (2 bedrooms + living room).
- 4-room HDB – System 3 or System 4, the most popular choice in Singapore.
- 5-room HDB / condo – System 4, sometimes plus a System 1 for the living room.
- Landed homes – usually a combination of systems for each floor.
Why one big system, not several small ones?
A multi-split needs only one outdoor unit, which saves space on the ledge, gives a neater look and usually costs less than separate System 1 units.
