Aircon Leaking Water: Causes and What To Do
Water dripping from your aircon indoor unit? Learn the common causes – choked drain pipe, dirty coil, low gas – and how to stop the leak for good.
By SPMM Group ·
An aircon removes moisture from the air, and that water must drain away through a pipe. When something goes wrong along the way, it ends up on your wall, bed or floor instead.
Common causes
Choked drainage pipe
The most common cause in Singapore. Dust and slime build up in the drain pan and pipe until water overflows. A general service includes a drainage flush – the main reason servicing every 3 months prevents leaks.
Dirty coil and drain pan
Heavy mould and slime on the coil can block the drain pan completely. A chemical overhaul dismantles the fan coil and cleans the drain pan properly.
Low refrigerant gas
Low gas can make the coil freeze. When the ice melts, it drips faster than the drain can handle. A pressure check and gas top-up fixes this.
Poor installation
If a new unit leaks, the drain pipe may not slope downwards properly or the unit may not be level. This needs to be corrected by the installer.
What to do right now
- Switch the aircon off to prevent water damage.
- Place a towel or container under the unit.
- Check if the filters are very dirty – cleaning them can help short-term.
- Don't run the unit for days with a leak; water can damage walls and electrical points.
Get it fixed
Most leaks are solved with a general service or chemical wash. WhatsApp a photo of the unit to +65 8078 4898 and we'll advise the right service, or book online.
