6 Signs It's Time to Replace Your Water Heater
Lukewarm showers, rusty water or a leaking tank? These 6 signs mean your water heater may need repair or replacement – and what to look for in a new one.

Water heaters usually give warning signs before they fail completely. Catching them early avoids a cold shower – or a flooded bathroom.
1. Water isn't hot enough
A worn heating element or thermostat means water takes longer to heat or never gets hot.
2. Hot water runs out quickly
Scale build-up in a storage tank reduces how much hot water it can hold.
3. Rusty or discoloured water
Brown water from the hot tap only can mean the inside of the tank is corroding.
4. Leaks or water around the heater
Any leak from the tank itself is serious – switch off the power and water supply and call a plumber.
5. Strange noises
Popping or rumbling sounds usually mean sediment has built up at the bottom of the tank.
6. It's more than 8–10 years old
Older storage heaters are less efficient and more likely to fail. Replacing them before they break avoids water damage.
