Power Keeps Tripping at Home? Common Causes and What To Do
Why does the power keep tripping in your Singapore home? Learn the common causes – faulty appliances, overloaded circuits, water – and when to call an electrician.
By SPMM Group ·
When the power trips, your distribution board is doing its job – cutting electricity because it detected something unsafe. The question is what.
Common causes
A faulty appliance
Kettles, water heaters, washing machines and old aircons are frequent culprits. A worn heating element or damaged cable can leak current to earth.
Overloaded circuit
Running several high-power appliances on one circuit – for example an oven, kettle and microwave together – can trip the breaker.
Water or moisture
Wet sockets in the kitchen, bathroom or on the balcony after heavy rain often cause tripping.
Wiring faults
Loose connections, damaged cables or ageing wiring – especially in older flats.
Safe first steps
- Switch off and unplug all appliances.
- Reset the main switch at the distribution board.
- Plug appliances back in one at a time – if it trips again, you've found the faulty one.
- If it trips with everything unplugged, the fault is in the wiring – stop and call an electrician.
Never tape down or bypass a breaker, and never open the board yourself.
